NOT YOUR USUAL SUSPECTS

A group blog featuring an international array of killer mystery, suspense, and romantic suspense writers. With premises and story lines different from your run-of-the-mill whodunits, we tend to write outside the box. We blog several times a week on all topics relating to romantic suspense and mystery, our writing, and our readers. We welcome all comments and often have guest bloggers. All our authors can be contacted separately, too, using their own social media links.

We find our genre delightfully, dangerously, and deliciously exciting - join us here, if you do too!

SHARON CALVIN

I started as a voracious reader before becoming a writer. In grade school I remember how frustrating it was that my local library limited the number of books I could check out based on what grade I was in. It made for a lot of trips to and from the library until I hit fifth grade—then it was limited only by what I could carry. I was in heaven!
My transition to writing evolved not just from reading, but from my love of words. By junior high (middle school for the younger set) I was spending part of my study period reading a dictionary. Synonyms are not interchangable! Subtle nuances in meaning, or more often in the connotation, rather than a word's denotation, can have a huge impact on a reader's response. I loved trying to find the right word to evoke a specifc emotion; something I'm still working on today.
Over the years my passions ebb and flow with current interests (art, horses, photography, snow skiing, scuba diving, target shooting...) but the loves that have stayed constant are reading, writing, and my husband (38 years and counting!)
I've been writing seriously since 1999 when my sister talked me into taking a creative writing course at Johnson County Community College, where she taught English. The instructor, Juliet Kincaid, was fabulous. I learned not only about good solid writing structure, but how to give, and receive, critques. That, along with the thick skin needed for rejections, went a long way towards keeping me moving forward in my writing career.
I joined Romance Writers of America in 2000. I've been a Golden Heart finalist twice, served on the board of my local chapter four years, and received the "call" in July, 2014 the week before the RWA National Conference in San Antonio, Texas. Yes, it was the best conference ever!

LYNNE CONNOLLY

Lynne writes for a number of publishers. She writes romantic suspense, paranormal romance, contemporary romance and historical romance. She is the winner of two Eppies (now retitled the EPIC ebook awards) and a goodly number of Recommended Reads etc from review sites.
While these are very gratifying, that isn't why she writes. She wants to bring the stories in her head to life and share them with others, in the hope that they might give her some peace.
She lives in the UK with her family, cat and doll's houses. Creating worlds on paper or in miniature seems to be her specialty!

VANESSA KEIR

Vanessa Kier spends way too much time thinking up ways she can torture her characters. A worst-case scenario thinker, she's been creating stories in her head since childhood. Now she’s found her niche in writing romantic thrillers that combine intense emotion with action-packed plots. The author of six books in The Surgical Strike Unit series about a privately run special operations group, she has set her new series WAR in West Africa, where she lived for a time.

When she’s not writing, listening to music, or playing puzzle games on her mobile device, Vanessa writes the occasional Tech Talk column for her local RWA chapter's newsletter and takes long hikes in the nearby hills.

LESLIE LANGTRY

Leslie Langtry is the author of the Merry Wrath Mysteries, Bombay’s Greatest Hits series, Sex, Lies, & Family Vacations, The Hanging Tree Tales as Max Deimos and several books she hasn’t finished yet, because she’s very lazy.

Leslie loves puppies and cake (but she will not share her cake with puppies) and thinks praying mantids make everything better. She lives with her family and assorted animals in the Midwest, where she is currently working on her next book and trying to learn to play the ukulele.

Leslie’s favorite color is orange and her favorite flavor is sugar.

CLARE LONDON

Clare took the pen name London from the city where she lives, loves, and writes. A lone, brave female in a frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home, she waits for the far distant day when she can afford to give up her day job as an accountant. She's written in many genres and across many settings, with novels and short stories published both online and in print. She says she likes variety in her writing while friends say she's just fickle, but as long as both theories spawn good fiction, she's happy. Most of her work features male/male romance and drama with a healthy serving of physical passion, as she enjoys both reading and writing about strong, sympathetic and sexy characters.  Clare currently has plenty of other projects in mind: she just has to find out where she left them in that frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home.

Find details of her publications and plenty of free fiction at her website, including an invitation to her mailing list. Visit her today and say hello!
